Students will explore and engage with the elements of playwriting to create exciting and original Cosplay, Hero/Heroine based One Acts. A play is different from a written story in that it is meant to be performed, not read. Playwriting is visual writing painted with characters’ dialogue. Drama is conflict, and figuring out how characters handle those desires and challenges is part of the fun of playwriting. Students will perform a staged reading of their plays at the end of the semester and the final written play can be included in your professional portfolios!

Lauren Unbekant is a movement theatre artist, writer, director, visual artist, and educator. As a movement artist, Lauren has performed her original work nationally and internationally at such festivals as the Humorologie Festival in Belgium, The International Festival of Clown in Barcelona, Fira Tàrrega in Spain, The International Movement Festival in London, and Just for Laughs in Montreal.

For more than a decade, she was the director of educational outreach for Syracuse Stage and faculty for Syracuse University Drama Department. Lauren is a master teaching artist with a knack for comedy. She has a bachelor’s degree in musical theatre from Syracuse University. And she has had the great fortune of working and training with some of the world’s great masters in movement and character clown, including Charlie Chaplin.

As a big fan of the arts, Lauren is super psyched to pass on some of her knowledge of performance to a new generation of creative thinkers!
